SCRIPTED (TV & FILM)

Scripted pitches are the most vulnerable to what I call the “Big Idea Trap.”

During my early days in scripted development, a young writer pitched my team a TV series about Detroit. He clicked through a flashy PowerPoint presentation and waxed poetic about the city’s history, its demise, its renaissance, its culture — until my colleague politely raised her hand and asked: “But what are we watching on the television?”

Ever since, whether I’m creating a pitch or evaluating one, I’ve made sure it answers that question (i.e., the only question that matters).

“Jamie has outstanding story skills. She is one of the most creative ‘creative executives’ I’ve worked with in a 35+ year career, with a real knack for inventive input and problem solving without stepping on the writer’s toes.”

“One of my first scripts was given a series of challenging, contradictory notes from a screenwriting mentorship and I felt underwater. Jamie was the best kind of guide through this process: nurturing yet firm. There are very few talents like her in this industry.”
