Audio is a wonderful medium. Sure, it has limitations (mostly the “not being able to see stuff” thing), but it can also give creators a lot of freedom. For instance, if you’re working on an ambitious science fiction series or period piece, pitching it as a podcast could be a great place to start, since production budgets — a big sticking point for TV buyers — aren’t as much of an issue when there are no sets, costumes, or special effects to worry about. Plus, in success, a great audio series could be optioned for television – think Homecoming, Dirty John, Dr. Death, or Dying for Sex.

But audio is its own beast, and an effective podcast pitch demonstrates a solid understanding of the medium’s unique qualities and capabilities. As the head of development for a podcast studio, I was sent a lot of pitches clearly written for film or TV. In other words, after the TV/film play didn’t work out, the creators pivoted without re-working the story or concept for audio, making the podcast pitch hard to take seriously.
